Projects

Below is a sample of some of Bicycles Create Change’s community bike projects.

See the blog for other events and projects.

BIOBIKE – YOUR FUTURE THANKS YOU!

The BioBike is a roving sustainable performance that myself, Claire Tracey and Sarah Cole performed at the Melbourne Sustainable Living Festival 2018.  This reiteration of the BioBike (there are two) is called Your Future Thanks You. The structure of the BioBike is made out of recycled materials.

We roved the festival each day talking to punters about sustainability, active transportation and environmental issues – and we handed out my custom-made Eco-Excellence Awards, which are made out of recycled materials, bike parts bits-and-bobs and inner tubes.

It was very popular and successful – we had a great time too!

Here’s some info on the first BioBike model called The Eco T(h)anks.

Here is the original conception and idea which was called Project Bio Bike and the Eco Protection Corps.

Here is an overview of the construction of the BioBike – it required quite a bit of ingenuity and extra help.

LEKI

My commuter bike – Leki.

She is a splendour to behold and a wonderful community builder.

Leki is a joy to ride….. here are some of our adventures:

Reiterations

For riding in MTB events, I have applied Leki’s colourful spirit to my singlespeed when riding MTB races like:

Singlespeed World Championships 2016

Chicks in the  Sticks (MTB) 2016

Bayview Blast 2017

Nina, Zoe & Leki. Relocating from Melbourne to Brisbane (2014). Leki unpacked, redressed and off for her maiden exploration of her new community!
Nina, Claire, Miss Marple (in basket) & Leki. Wattle Festival (2013) Hurstbridge, VIC.
Leki & Nina (2016) Wynnym Halloween Parkrun. 5kms Community Fun Run. I rode Leki down and ran in full costume. Afterwards, Leki & I joined all the other participants for a social gathering. Great Fun!

LEKI AND THE OVA

For this project I collaborated with the indomitable Claire Tracey to create the roving performance/art bike Leki and The Ova.

This is a pedal-powered no-money/barter/trade/swap, mobile op shop!!

We roved the Melbourne Sustainability and Living Festival (2014) and went out twice a day. It was a rip roaring great success and the crowd loved  it!

Who knew that being sustainable could be so stylish, colourful and fun!?!

As an added bonus, I rode Leki AND the Ova (without the clothes, but fully decorated) from Northcote into the centre of Melbourne, then back out again. The caboose perfectly fit the width of the bike lanes – GOLD!

I was impressed with how supportive the motorists and other road users were – everyone cheered as I rode past.

What a great advocate to promote safe and fun urban cycling. Hazah!

ART BIKES

Here are two examples of my art bikes.

1. Cons_U-Me Blues (2014) Social Issue:  Fast-fashion & speed of cycling industry innovations = wasteful consumerism & obsolescence.  Link here.

2. Kids bikes are hard work (2016). Social Issue: Child Labour.
